Before you write that book

I'm a greedy reader. I ask quite a lot from books and their authors, and I don't usually get it. But when I do, I'm a reader for life.

Here's what I demand from a book:

  • I don't want to be entertained, I want to be moved.
  • I don't want to read, I want to experience.
  • I don't want to consume, I want to be consumed.
  • I don't want to be a fan, I want to be a protégé.
  • I don't want to simply observe, I want to interact.
  • I don't want to be impressed, I want to be enchanted.
  • I don't want 'just the facts', I want the context, the meta, the footnotes and addendums.
  • I don't want to just follow along, I want to see the map.
  • I don't want to be shown the answers, I want to learn how to discover them.

And when you start writing your bio for that book:

  • I don't want to see your studio headshot, I want to see you in your element.
  • I don't want to know where you live, I want to know how you live.
  • If you're funny, you won't need to prove it in your bio.
